The usual stop - the Children's Department of the Rodina Library in Stara Zagora

Our topic this week in the Children's Department of the Rodina Library was about vultures in Bulgaria and Red-breasted Geese.

Two different species, but precious, disappearing and beautiful. That's how we would describe vultures - beautiful birds. Although we are all used to seeing them in children's movies as bad characters, quite undeservedly, they are actually extremely useful animals for nature. They call them "nature's cleaners", or as our team likes to say: "nature's vacuum cleaners". They feed on carrion, thus stopping the spread of infections among the wild inhabitants.

The other species we talked about with the children was the Red-breasted Goose. A species that, unfortunately, in recent years we observe less and less in Bulgaria, due to the warming in winter. Few know that they are also very useful for us humans. Feeding on the first sprouted wheat, thus stimulating its expansion. Fragile birds weighing only one kilogram and 200 grams, traveling up to 8000 km in three months.

The children were curious again, asking questions and telling stories about wild animals they had rescued.

Both species are protected by the European ecological network Natura 2000.

We thank the Children's Department of Rodina Library for another opportunity to be close to children, who are an inexhaustible source of energy and are our charge to keep moving forward!
