At the end of June we gathered again with the students from “Rayna Knyagina” Primary School and their biology teacher – Mrs. Monika Teneva in order to observe the biodiversity of Maritsa River, part of Natura 2000.
This time we gathered with the 7th grade students on the north side of Maritsa River. Green Balkans team prepared field scopes and binoculars with which the young nature lovers could observe mallards, Eurasian Wigeons (kind of duck), Little Egrets and others.
Aneliya from Green Balkans told the students about the protected species like the Pygmy Cormorant, the bats and other waterfowl which are protected species and are met along Maritsa River– like the Red-breasted Goose and the Sandwich Tern. Also, she shared how important is Maritsa River as a wildlife corridor.
As a guest of the open lesson was the Hobby TV cameraman who shot footage for the reportage which you can see here:

We would like to thank Mrs. Teneva and the “Rayna Knyagina” Primary School - Plovdiv, management for the good cooperation!
Additional information:
Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.
Red-breasted Goose
The Red-breasted Goose is a globally endangered species, protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network. Bulgaria is an important country for the protection of the species - almost the entire world population spends the winter in the region of Primorska Dobrudzha.
Pigmy Cormorant
With only a few nesting sites in the country, the Pigmy Cormorant is one of the three species of cormorants found in Bulgaria. The species is closely associated with ponds and nests in colonies, making it vulnerable to disturbance. One of the most endangered species, which is why it is strictly protected by the Natura 2000 ecological network.
Bats
33 from the 35 species of bats in Europe can be found in Bulgaria. They are of key importance for ecosystems. All bat species are protected by the Biodiversity Act, and the forest and underground habitats of the species are protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network.
