World Wetlands Day is celebrated every year on February 2. The aim is to raise public awareness of the importance of wetlands both for human societies and for the full functioning of natural ecosystems. In 2024, Wetlands Day is celebrated under the theme: "Wetlands and Human Well-Being".
To mark this important date for nature protection, the Green Balkans team visited the Historical Museum - General Toshevo, where the Association's "The Living Exhibition" was opened in the presence of students and guests of the museum. We were pleasantly surprised by the huge interest in the exhibition, and our experts presented to the interested public the activities of the Association for the conservation of rare and endangered species - Red-breasted goose, Black vulture, Lesser kestrel, Sandwich tern and others.
It was also conducted monitoring of wetlands, which are of great importance for the wintering populations of geese in our country - Durankulak Lake, Complex Shabla-Ezerets, Shablenska Tuzla and their adjacent fields where the birds feed. Samples were collected for parasitological studies and monitoring of the health status of the populations wintering in our country. We managed to observe a flock of about 1,500 Great white-fronted geese, as well as other interesting species that spend the winter months here - Whooper swan, Tundra swan, Red-crested pochard, Common goldeneye, Red-breasted merganser and others.
