On November 25 and 26, the Winter Festival "Shabla and the Birds" 2023 was held, dedicated to the nature conservation of Coastal Dobrogea and, in particular, its birds, with an emphasis on the Red-breasted goose. The organizer is the Green Educational Center in Shabla with the assistance of the Municipality of Shabla and the Karon Limen Municipal Foundation.
The event was organized in several modules, in some of which the Association "Green Balkans" took part. Our experts presented the visitors with the activities of the Association for Research and Conservation of Birds in Bulgaria and specifically with the endangered species of Red-breasted goose, which winters in the region of Coastal Dobrogea, but recently, due to climate changes, a more regular winter visitor in the region of the Burgas Lakes.
Our participation in the Winter Festival "Shabla and the Birds" aims to help raise the awareness and nature protection culture of adolescents and to strengthen the empathy and understanding of local communities towards the problems facing the protection of birds and their importance for the well-being and development of the region. We hope that such participations of ours involve more and more people in the cause of protecting the rich diversity of birds found along the Via Pontica migration route.
During the festival, visitors had the opportunity to view the Living Exhibition, part of the European Green Belt international initiative, promoting efforts to protect rare birds inhabiting the cross-border regions of the three neighboring Balkan countries - Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey. The exhibition "Natura 2000 in Bulgaria" was also presented - 30 attractive photos of beautiful habitats and species of European conservation importance, aiming to promote to the public the importance of the European ecological network NATURA 2000 in Bulgaria. Interest was aroused by the Green Balkans film dedicated to the conservation of the Coastal Dobrogea’s nature - "The attractiveness of Coastal Dobrogea", which was projected at Community center "Zora". There were many educational games and puzzles for the curious little ones, and as a reward for their enthusiasm they also received gifts from the Association in the form of books, posters and board games.
Despite the wintry conditions during the Festival, visitors had the opportunity to enjoy the varied program, which also included a Winter Fest Bazaar, Candle and Mosaic Workshops, a bird presentation and a trip to the Shabla Lighthouse, which is the oldest lighthouse on our coast and in the stormy weather offered a particularly attractive and spectacular sight.
