On 18 and 19 July Green Balkans’ team visited Coastal Dobrogea for a monitoring of state of agricultural fields owned by the organization. These are situated in territories of high importance for geese wintering in Bulgaria and are part of the activities directed towards conservation of the Red-breasted goose and its feeding sites.
During the past winter season bad state of winter crops was registered in Dobrogea with main reason for that being the continuous drought in autumn. That was also reflected by the numbers of geese flocks recorded during the regular monitoring made by organization that showed low numbers. Bad food basis forces geese to fly longer distances in search of food – something that in addition to other threats for the globally endangered species Red-breasted goose can lead to critical state of the species’ population.
Monitoring of the fields owned by the organization aims preparation for the new winter season when wintering flocks are expected from the North and information for the state of the fields in the region will help for more efficient monitoring.
The team has also cleared vegetation around one of the info-boards for the species and project placed in the region.

Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.
Red-breasted Goose
The Red-breasted Goose is a globally endangered species, protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network. Bulgaria is an important country for the protection of the species - almost the entire world population spends the winter in the region of Primorska Dobrudzha.
