On March 15 and 16 a team of Green Balkans carried out monitoring of wetlands in the area of Coastal Dobrogea.
Although the warm weather has moved geese to the north of our country on their way to habitat for nesting and rearing, in our country currently runs an active migration of birds moving north from the places where they spent the unfavorable period of winter months. To follow this process Green Balkans conduct regular monitoring of habitats in the region, which is part of the monitoring of wintering geese in the country and in particular Red-breasted Geese.
The field survey showed that the spring is in full swing. During the monitoring of Durankulak and Shabla Lakes there were no species that usually winter in Bulgaria. Typical spring migrants, as well as nesting species, were also observed. The greatest interest was the nest of a White-tailed eagle, in which the birds are probably incubating. Other interesting species observed during the tour through the wetlands are: Lesser black-backed gull, Stonechats, Hoopoe, Warblers.
During the monitoring in the region of Lake Shabla-Ezeretz there was a visible drop in the water level, which is caused by the digging of the sand spit that separates the lake from the sea. Afterwards from the published information it turned out that this destructive deed was done by Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Waters Varna due to request by Shabla Mayor – just the public bodies that should have been enforcing law but obviously did the opposite.
Since there are no boundaries in nature, and the fragile balance in ecosystems depends on the interaction between all species in a given habitat, the processes and dynamics in the delicate period of migration are extremely indicative of the state of the environment both in Bulgaria and globally. That is why the Green Balkans team will continue to actively monitor the species and their behavior and condition in the region and to inform you in due time about the results.
