PARK(ING) DAY with Green Balkans

24.09.2020
Park(ing) Day is a global event with ecological purpose and it is organized every third Friday in September. Its aim is to draw attention to the idea of a cleaner urban environment.

The initiative was organized for the second consecutive year in Plovdiv and Green Balkans took part in it along with 5 other public and private organizations. The residents and guests of the city had the chance to take advantage of a total of 6 transformed locations, to get an idea of how much space is taken up for free parking and how much more beautiful and green the urban environment can be.

The “Natura 2000 in Bulgaria – New Horizons” project team transformed a small part of the urban environment into a place for rare and protected species of the local fauna. The Black and Griffon Vultures part of the “Bright Future for the Black Vulture” project were among the surprises for Kapana as well as a Red-breasted Goose, a Sandwich Tern and a dolphin. Whether in a Friday hurry or just passing by, some people took the time to learn about the threats to a number of unique species, albeit far from the urban environment.

The initiative is a part of “Place Bulgaria” programme of BG Be active aiming for a change in the environment we all live in.

Additional information:
Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.

Red-breasted Goose
The Red-breasted Goose is a globally endangered species, protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network. Bulgaria is an important country for the protection of the species - almost the entire world population spends the winter in the region of Primorska Dobrudzha.

Sandwich Tern
In Bulgaria, the Sandwich Tern nests only on Pomorie and Atanasovsko lakes. Thanks to years of hard work, today the population of the species in Pomorie Lake is the largest on the Balkan Peninsula. Listed as an endangered species and included in the Birds Directive, the Sandwich Tern and its habitats are protected by the Natura 2000 ecological network.

Griffon Vulture
Widespread and numerous in the past, at the end of the last century the Griffon Vulture had only 1-2 active nests restricted to the Eastern Rhodopes. Thanks to the efforts of conservation organizations, today the population of the species is growing and we can see it in the Balkan Mountains, Eastern Rhodopes and Kresna. The species and its habitats are protected by the Natura 2000 ecological network.
