On 5 and 6 January 2020, Green Balkans experts have conducted monitoring of wintering birds in Durankulak Lake.
Main goal of the monitoring was to check whether wintering geese have already arrived in the region that is of key importance for the globally threatened species Red breasted goose (Branta ruficollis). In the afternoon of 5 January were observed only 18 White fronted geese (Anser albifrons) and 14 Greylag geese (Anser anser). Except these in a field close to the lake there was one very rare visitor – a Great bustard (Otis tarda). The species is considered extinct in Bulgaria despite observations of single birds in the past decade. In the lake have been registered approximately 1300 wintering birds – low number that is not a surprise given the mild winter.
In the Shablenska tuzla was observed concentration of Teals (Anas crecca) – more than 300 birds – and about 60 Shelducks (Tadorna tadorna).
