A small green step helping the wintering birds

We are so busy in our everyday lives that we often neglect nature around us. In many different places on Earth people have found ways to reconnect with their wild neighbors even in big cities. You want to know how they do it? Well, it’s quite simple actually, an ever more popular idea is putting bird feeders in different places - the nearby garden, the school yard or near our office building, even at the balcony. This is a wonderful way to help birds in winter and even get to know our wild neighbors better.
PS: It is scientifically proven that close interactions with nature in an urban environment can help improve our health and well-being.

That is why the Green Balkans ‘NATURA 2000 in Bulgaria - NEW HORIZONS’ project team visited the TTEC Europe office building in Plovdiv as well as the ‘Sveti Sveti Kiril and Metodiy" elementary school in Parvomay where we talked about the birds in towns and cities during the winter. We also talked about other wintering birds in Bulgaria.

In the beginning of December we met the TTEC Europe team in Plovdiv who often participate in other environmental activities. Our colleague Polina Hristova told them about the protected red-breasted goose and pygmy cormorant while making bird feeders together.

A couple of days earlier Polina, Aneliya and Viki met the students from the 5th to the 7th grade at the ‘Sveti Sveti Kiril and Metodiy" elementary school in Parvomay where the kids and their teacher, Mariyan Ivanov from the ‘Teach for Bulgaria’ program, also made bird feeders. The children learned how to take care of birds around their school and homes during the winter and we told them about other wintering species in Bulgaria, like the protected red-breasted goose, pygmy cormorant and the sandwich tern.

We are very happy we met all those enthusiastic people who want to help birds around us!

Thank you for the hospitality and the great time! We will be waiting for photos of the first occupants of the bird feeders we made together :)

Natura 2000

Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.

Red-breasted Goose
The Red-breasted Goose is a globally endangered species, protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network. Bulgaria is an important country for the protection of the species - almost the entire world population spends the winter in the region of Primorska Dobrudzha.

Pigmy Cormorant
With only a few nesting sites in the country, the Pigmy Cormorant is one of the three species of cormorants found in Bulgaria. The species is closely associated with ponds and nests in colonies, making it vulnerable to disturbance. One of the most endangered species, which is why it is strictly protected by the Natura 2000 ecological network.
