Last week the Green Balkans team once again visited the Durankulak and Shabla lakes. This time we weren’t alone.
On the 18th March, the ‘Natura 2000 in Bulgaria - New Horizons’ project team visited the children from the ‘Sveti Kliment Ohridski’ primary school at the village of Durankulak where we talked about biodiversity and the importance of wetlands. The kids were very enthusiastic about the fieldtrip to the lake where they had the opportunity to observe waterfowl with binoculars and a fieldscope, like real ecologists. We had also prepared an interesting game for the kids to practice the things they had learned about different species and their habitats.
On the next day our team was invited at the Green Educational Center in Shabla, where students from 6 countries had gathered to learn more about wetlands, coastal areas and human impact on them. We presented the Green Balkans activities for the protection of the endangered red-breasted goose in front of the guests from Greece, Latvia, Portugal, Italy and Spain as well to the Bulgarian students from the Vocational High School for Veterinary Medicine, Dobrich.
After the presentation, all students had the opportunity to observe waterfowl - grey heron, great cormorant, great crested grebe and other birds, from the big island on the Durankulak lake. The children learned how to use optical equipment and also how to collect insects with insect net bags.
It was our pleasure to meet so many young people from all over Europe and to find out we are not the only ones trying to preserve fragile but very important ecosystems.
Our friends from HobbyTv, who are also our partners within the ‘Natura 2000 in Bulgaria - New Horizons’ project, had the opportunity to film the initiative. We congratulate and thank all children, brave enough to talk in front of the cameras. Check out the video here.
We would like to thank the management of ‘Sveti Kliment Ohridski’ primary school in Durankulak and all children for their enthusiasm.
We would also like to thank the Vocational High School for Veterinary Medicine in Dobrich for inviting us and the Green Educational Center, Shabla municipality for hosting the event.
