The village of Durankulak is the closest settlement to the lake complex of the same name, which is famous for its biodiversity and is included in the Ramsar list of wetlands of international importance. The Lake of Durankulak and its adjacent territories are both protected by the national legislation and included in the European ecological network Natura 2000.
That’s why experts of Green Balkans presented intersting facts about the wild inhabitants of the wetland in front of students and teachers of the primary school “St. Kliment Ohridski” in the village of Durankulak. Both the teachers and the students showed great interest towards the environmental topic and were impressed by the photos of the release in the wild of the Red-breasted goose Brent. Brent was marked with a sattelite transmitter last week and was released at the Durankulak Lake after one year spent in the Rescue Center in Stara Zagora.
Curious facts about the life of the Red-breasted Geese were presented also before the students of the primary school in the nearby village of Spasovo. The team of Green Balkans met with students of all the classes in the primary school “Yordan Yovkov”. With the youngest children from 1st to the 4th grade were arranged a number of educational games related to enhancement of the general ecological knowledge of the participants. As well as in Durankulak, in the village of Spasovo both the students and the teachers were very hospitable and curious and claimed desire for future common work.
The students of both schools received posters and leaflets for the Red-breasted Geese. The youngest children were also granted with educational boards for their class-rooms (Colourful story for the life of the Red-breasted Geese) and books with the story of Brent (The Adventures of the Red-breasted Goose Brent).
The team of Green Balkans also visited the Green Educational Center in the town of Shabla where at the moment can be seen a six board educational exposition for the Red-breasted Geese.
The exposistion, the educational materials and the educational visits in the region are implemented by Green Balkans NGO with the support of EECONET Action Fund, Frankfurt Zoological Society, EuroNatur Foundation and Committee against Bird crime (Germany).
