Join the World Water Day celebrations in Plovdiv this year!

We start off on Friday, the 22nd of March. This year’s World Water Day motto is “Leaving no one behind”. Today, billions of people are still living without safe water, which means ‘safely managed drinking water service’: water that is accessible on the premises, available when needed, and free from contamination. Their households, schools, workplaces, farms and factories struggling to survive and thrive. Marginalized groups – women, children, refugees, indigenous peoples, disabled people and many others – are often overlooked, and sometimes face discrimination, as they try to access and manage the safe water they need.

Water is equally important to all humans, animals and plants, so we have to strive to save rather than waste water as well as preserve natural water resources.

The Green Balkans team is partnering the East Aegean River Basin Directorate in the annual Water happening. The event is going to take place at 11 a.m. at the Stefan Stambolov square in front of the city municipality. Students from 22 schools, some of whom representing the World Youth Parliament For Water, will take part in the initiative along with representatives of the institutions - all Basin Directorates, Plovdiv municipality, RIEW Plovdiv and non-government organizations, such as Green Balkans and BSPB.

In the afternoon we are going to visit the Regional Natural History Museum, where our colleagues have prepared an interesting program for the event. The Museum aquarium is also celebrating its 45th birthday, so there will be a ‘Life in the Water’ lottery, ‘Flying fish’, as well as a ‘paper fish’ workshop, an ‘aquascaping’ demonstration and, of course, a cake :) You can find the full program here.

The Green Balkans team is also going to take part in the event.

At 16:30h we are officially opening the children drawing exhibition ‘Conserving wetlands and fighting against climate change in our region’. After announcing the drawing contest in January, we’ve received over 160 unique drawings from 18 different cities and now it is time to announce the winners of the contest. Our professional jury of artists is going to award the best drawings. We are going to announce the winners on the 21st of March and all drawings will be exhibited in the Botany hall at the Regional Natural History Museum Plovdiv until the 5th of April.

At 18:00h at the museum planetarium, we are going to screen the ‘THANK YOU FOR THE RAIN’ movie, thanks to the Activist38 and with the Green Balkans help. The film focuses on the consequences of climate change, more info here:
For five years, Kisilu, a Kenyan farmer, uses his camera to capture the life of his family of seven children and their neighbors. He has filmed floods, droughts and storms but also the more human costs: his kids are sent home from school when he can’t pay the fees; men are moving to towns in search for jobs; and family tensions rise. When a storm destroys his house, Kisilu starts building a community movement of farmers fighting the impacts of extreme weather. He brings this message of hope all the way to the United Nations Climate Talks in Paris. Here, amid the murky cut and thrust of politics at the biggest environmental show on earth, Kisilu and Norwegian filmmaker Julia Dahr's relationship takes on a remarkable twist, shedding a powerful light on the climate justice movement and the vastly different worlds they represent.
THANK YOU FOR THE RAIN addresses a range of issues linked to climate change, including climate justice, urbanization, gender equality, education, access to water, climate refugees, and adaptation.
