For the first time – a European shag with a GPS transmitter

In the past month, our team achieved another incredible success - tagging two European shag individuals (Gulosus aristotelis) with GPS transmitters, a species rare for our country, which is included in the Red Book of Bulgaria as Vulnerable. One of the individuals is an adult and is from the breeding colony near the village of Tyulenovo, and the other is a young bird from the colony on the island St. Ivan near Sozopol.

The European shag inhabits only rocky seashores. In Bulgaria it nests along the rocky coast between Kavarna and Tyulenovo, as a significant change in the nesting area is the formation of a new nesting colony in the south, on the island Saint Ivan near Sozopol in 2013. However, the winter migrations of the species are not sufficiently well understood. Outside the breeding season, large aggregations are observed at a considerable distance from the breeding colonies.

It is this data that we hope to supplement with the information from the transmitters. For now, the birds are sticking to the coast and their colonies. But the moment the nesting is finished and the chicks are fully grown, their migration will begin, and we will be able to track their movements thanks to the data they will send us.

So, expect more interesting news about the migrations of shags in the Black Sea here or on our Facebook page.
